Travel booking marketplace Busbud announced the formation of Terra Mobility, a new parent company created to combine ground travel booking platforms with TerraOS.

Alongside the new brand, the company announced a $40 million (approximately R655 million at the time of publishing) financing from Vista Credit Partners.

Ratality by Terra Mobility

Busbud acquired Ratality (a cloud-based platform for intercity bus operators founded in South Africa) in 2024. Ratality is now operating as ‘Ratality by Terra Mobility’.

The new name reflects Ratality’s place within the broader Terra Mobility structure while, according to the company, remaining purpose-built for South and Southern Africa’s specific market requirements.

What’s changing, and what isn’t

Terra Mobility is the new parent brand sitting above two business lines.

The first is a group of consumer travel marketplaces: Busbud (global), Buson (Brazil), and Recorrido (Chile and Latin America). The second is TerraOS, an enterprise operating system for ground travel operators that combines capabilities from previously acquired platforms, including Betterez and Ratality.

TerraOS covers ticketing, inventory management, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered revenue management, demand forecasting, and distribution.

Approximately 300 operators across more than 15 countries already run on the company’s enterprise solutions. Terra Mobility employs 270 people across 26 countries.

For SA operators, the company says the same platform, same team, and same day-to-day relationship carry forward under the new name.

What Terra Mobility actually is

Terra Mobility announced a $40 million credit financing from Vista Credit Partners, the credit-investing arm of Vista Equity Partners, which specialises in enterprise software.

As per the company’s announcement, the capital will go toward accelerating TerraOS’s AI capabilities, deepening marketplace presence across core regions, and supporting acquisitions within the ground travel sector.

“Terra Mobility sits at the center of a large and structurally underserved ground travel market,” said Greg Galligan, senior managing director at Vista Equity Partners.

The consumer marketplace side of the business connects more than 100 million travellers annually with more than 4 000 operators across more than 60 countries, covering approximately 30 million routes. North America, Latin America, and Europe are listed as the company’s core regions.

LP Maurice, CEO and co-founder of Terra Mobility, pointed to rising traveller expectations as context for the move, saying the bar for booking experiences had been raised and that the company’s mission was to put “world-class technology solutions within reach of every ground travel operator.”

Why the ground travel market is worth watching

Ground travel serves approximately 10 billion passengers annually worldwide, according to the company’s release. That’s roughly double the volume of commercial aviation.

Industry sources cited in the announcement estimate the combined ground and sea travel market, including buses, rail, ferries, and airport transfers, at approximately $198 billion (approximately R3.25 trillion).

AI-powered revenue management and demand forecasting, central to TerraOS’s pitch, are becoming table stakes in a market where travellers increasingly compare ground travel against air and ride-hailing options.
