The World Cup kicked off last week, and Uber wants to be part of how South Africa watches it.

The company has rolled out a series of match day activations running through 19 July, covering everything from discounted rides to fan zones to flag-wrapped cars inside the app. The offers are active now and will run for the rest of the tournament.

Getting to the fan zones

Fans can get discounted rides to selected fan zones using the promo code MATCHDAY26.

The discount applies on all South African match days, including South Africa vs Mexico and South Africa vs Czechia.

Participating fan zones span the major cities. In Johannesburg, that’s Montecasino Piazza and Gold Reef City Casino. Cape Town gets MOJO Market and the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. Durban has Suncoast Casino and Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Pretoria rounds it out with Eastwoods Tavern and Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.

Flags on your map

Inside the app, there’s a small but fun detail: users can select their country of support and watch every car icon on the map turn into that country’s flag.

It’s a small touch, but the kind that makes opening the app on a match day feel slightly more like an event.

Uber Eats, too

Uber Eats has extended its delivery hours until 2am for the duration of the tournament, which matters more than it sounds like once you’ve tried to order food during a match that kicks off at an inconvenient hour.

There are also three curated match day boxes available for purchase through Eats, done in partnership with CityFuel. Matchday discounts and offers are all collected on a dedicated page inside the app.

Yahya Munir, Communications Manager for MEA at Uber, explained the reasoning behind the push:

“Sport has a unique way of bringing people together, and the World Cup remains one of the country’s most celebrated shared experiences. Having supported major sporting moments in South Africa for years, from the Basketball Africa League to community-led initiatives across the country, we’re excited to be part of helping South Africans celebrate every moment of the tournament, whether fans are heading to a fan zone or watching from home.”

The activations run until the World Cup wraps on 19 July.
