The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced the payment dates for social grants in September 2026, with disbursements set to begin in the first week of the month.
For millions of South Africans whose data bundles and grocery lists depend on these dates, the schedule is now confirmed.
- Three consecutive days cover the main grant types.
- A fourth sits in reserve for a specific group of beneficiaries: those flagged for review.
If your grant lands in your account and you do nothing, it stays there. If your account has been flagged and you also do nothing, the story gets more complicated.
Sassa grant payments in September
According to SASSA, the September 2026 payment schedule runs as follows:
- the Older Persons Grant pays on Wednesday, 2 September 2026;
- the Disability Grant pays on Thursday, 3 September 2026; and
- Children’s Grants, which include the Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, and Care Dependency Grant, pay on Friday, 4 September 2026.
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant follows a staggered rolling schedule later in the month, typically from mid-to-late September. Beneficiaries can check their personal payment date at the official SRD portal.
SASSA introduced a fourth payment day for beneficiaries who have been identified for grant reviews or eLife Certification.
- Those payments are set for Monday, 7 September 2026.
SASSA has warned that failure to comply with the review process could result in grants being suspended.
What the review process is actually about
According to SASSA, social grant reviews and eLife Certification are conducted under the Social Assistance Act and are intended to verify beneficiaries’ continued eligibility for grants.
The process also helps prevent payments to deceased or ineligible individuals, detect fraud, and ensure public funds reach qualifying recipients.
The agency said regular reviews play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the social assistance system, and also help improve service delivery through updated beneficiary information.
Beneficiaries who receive grants on the fourth payment day are reminded to visit their nearest SASSA office to complete the review process and avoid disruptions to future payments.
SASSA grant amounts for September
The grant amounts in effect for September 2026 are the same rates that applied from April 2026.
According to SASSA, those amounts are as follows:
- Older Persons, Disability, and Care Dependency Grants: R2,400
- War Veterans Grant: R2,420
- Foster Child Grant: R1,290
- Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid: R580
The SRD grant remains at R370, paid on staggered rolling dates after monthly verification.
If your name is on the fourth-day list, September 7 is not a bonus payday, but rather a signal to act. The review window does not wait for convenience.
