Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) has announced the CIRQA Smart Band, its first screen-free health and fitness tracker.
The fitness band tracks advanced fitness and wellness features around the clock, with all data routed to the Garmin Connect app, and no subscription required to access it.
According to the company’s official announcement, the smart band gets up to 10 days of battery life. That is not nothing when an unstable grid *cough* hi, Eskom *cough* can make charging routines as chaotic as a beta launch at 2am.
How it works
With no display on the device itself, everything lives in the Garmin Connect app. A single side button on the band allows users to start a pre-set favourite activity without reaching for their phone.
The band automatically detects and records a variety of activities. The Garmin Connect app allows users to view and edit those activities afterwards, and the band is said to adapt over time to classify them more accurately as users confirm or correct them.

The fabric band can be worn on the wrist or as an upper-arm band, depending on the activity or sleep preference. It is available in colours including Citron Gray, Mauve, French Gray, Dark Olive, Captain Blue, French Blue and Black.
Garmin CIRQA Smart Band features
It’s comes with the usual Garmin features you know and love. And then some.
Health and sleep tracking
Garmin says the CIRQA Smart Band monitors wrist-based heart rate, Body Battery energy monitoring, Pulse Ox, stress, skin temperature and more, with data accessible immediately in Garmin Connect.
For sleep, the band is said to provide a detailed breakdown of sleep stages, a sleep score, guidance on optimal sleep duration, heart rate variability, respiration and nap detection. Garmin positions this as a tool for understanding recovery, not just hours logged.

Women can also track their menstrual cycle and pregnancy. According to Garmin, the band supports better period predictions and past ovulation estimates by tracking skin temperature during sleep, and can sync data with the FDA-cleared Natural Cycles birth control app. A Natural Cycles subscription is required for that integration.
Activity tracking
The CIRQA Smart Band supports manual tracking for more than 80 activities, including running, walking and yoga. Users can select a favourite activity to start directly from the band’s single side button.
Garmin says the band includes training readiness, heart rate variability status, VO2 max and training status features. Workout benefit and recovery time guidance are also included, giving users a read on how each session affects the body and how long recovery should take.

For outdoor activities, the band connects to a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone’s GPS to track walks, rides and runs.
A LiveTrack feature lets contacts follow along in real time via a smartphone and the Garmin Connect app.
Pricing and availability
The CIRQA Smart Band is priced at R4 499 and available to order from the Garmin website from 28 July, as well as through select retailers.
The CIRQA Smart Band is also available through select retailers.

Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, said in the company’s announcement, “this smart band complements our lineup of popular smartwatches and wellness monitors, allowing users to transition smoothly between their Garmin devices throughout the day.”[2]
