How South African lotto draws work
South Africa runs six main lottery games, each with its own draw schedule and prize structure.
- Daily Lotto draws every single day, giving you five numbers from a pool of 36.
- Lotto and Lotto Plus 1 draw together every Wednesday and Saturday,
- and if you buy a Lotto ticket you’re automatically entered into both unless you opt out.
- Lotto 5 Max replaced Lotto Plus 2 in June 2026 and runs on the same Wednesday and Saturday schedule.
- Powerball and Powerball Xtra draw together every Tuesday and Friday.
- Powerball Xtra was renamed from Powerball Plus in the same June 2026 changeover that brought in Lotto 5 Max.
Numbers are drawn using certified random number generators or physical draw machines, and the process is independently audited to keep things fair.
Every draw is run by Sizekhaya Holdings, the operator licensed to run South Africa’s National Lottery. They took over from the previous operator, Ithuba, on 1 June 2026. Ithuba was managing the national lottery from eight years.
Frequently asked questions
We’ve got the answers.
Results refresh automatically after each draw. Daily Lotto updates every day, Lotto and Lotto 5 Max update Wednesday and Saturday nights, and Powerball and Powerball Xtra update Tuesday and Friday nights.
Draws generally take place in the evening, with results published shortly after. Exact draw times can shift slightly, so if you’re playing close to a deadline, check the official Ithuba site or your retailer for that day’s cutoff.
Compare your ticket numbers against the winning numbers shown above. For Lotto, Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto 5 Max, you’re checking six main numbers plus a bonus ball. For Powerball and Powerball Xtra, you’re checking five main numbers plus the red PowerBall. Daily Lotto only uses five main numbers with no bonus ball.
They’re three separate draws that happen on the same numbers you already picked when you bought a standard Lotto ticket, provided you added the Plus games at purchase. Each game has its own independent set of winning numbers and its own prize pool, so winning or losing one doesn’t affect the others.
Jackpots grow through ticket sales and roll over any time nobody matches all the main numbers in the top prize division. That’s why you’ll sometimes see a jackpot climb sharply over several weeks before someone finally wins it.
Smaller prizes can usually be claimed at any authorised lottery retailer. Larger prizes need to be claimed directly through Ithuba, often in person at a regional claims centre, with valid ID and your winning ticket. Always verify your ticket through official channels before making any claim.
