Wondering what’s next in foldable tech? Samsung plans to roll out a tri‑fold phone before 2026 ends.
Roh Tae-moon, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed that development is well underway and usability is the current focus.
Speaking to Korea Times, Roh said the hardware is built, but the team is focused on usability.
Samsung tri‑fold phone
Samsung first teased the idea of a tri-fold smartphone with its Flex S and Flex G concept phones at MWC 2023.
Though the device wasn’t shown at July’s Galaxy Unpacked, Roh confirmed both the hardware and the tri‑fold form are nearly finalised.
A tri‑fold phone could finally give you tablet-level screen real estate in a pocket‑ready form.
But at nearly $3,500 (R63,000) and unproven durability, it’s still a high‑stakes gamble. Still, Samsung seems determined to see it through.
Key details include:
- Name still TBD, insiders hint at Galaxy G Fold
- Triple-screen design: involves two hinges and three display panels
- Premium price tag: expected to cost between $2,900–$3,500
- Preview only in select markets: likely limited to South Korea and China initially
No specs confirmed
The specs are not confirmed yet, neither the durability test results, the camera setups, nor the battery size.
Rumours suggest it might include a 10-inch OLED interior display and a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, but Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything publicly.
Roh says users could expect Samsung’s first tri-fold phone “before the year’s out”. Likely a late-2025 reveal.
Most expect a surprise in October or November after the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch.
Why go the tri-fold route?
There are a few features that put a tri-fold phone ahead of a regular smartphone.
- More screen, same size: opens up like a tablet, folds into a pocket-sized phone.
- Competitive push: Huawei’s Mate XT tri‑fold launched in 2024. Samsung doesn’t want to be left behind
- Usability first: Samsung is testing hinges, screen fatigue, and durability before touting launch-ready features.
