WhatsApp is quietly rolling out a new feature that lets users add music. So, if you’ve been wondering how to add music to your WhatsApp Status, keep reading.
It’s similar to the feature Instagram has had for years, where a song can be added to Stories and opened in Spotify. Except, no Spotify (yet).
Here’s what you need to know, including how to check if you have access, and how to use it.
WhatsApp Status’ musical upgrade
The rollout is gradual, so the feature isn’t available to everyone just yet.
While WhatsApp hasn’t made a big announcement about it, the chat service did quietly confirm the feature is still being tested.
It’s as easy as selecting your image to share on your WhatsApp Status, and choosing a song from Meta’s licensed music catalogue.
How to add music to WhatsApp Status
First, open WhatsApp and go to the Status tab like you normally would.
Tap the camera icon to create a new status update. From here, as per usual, you can choose the photo or video you want to share.

You’ll see a music note icon in the top left corner. Click that, and search for a song or an artist. Or, just pick from the trending tracks in your country.
Once the song is selected, you can choose which part of the track you want to play (exactly like Instagram.) Then, just post your status and your chosen track will play along with the photo or video.
If you see a song in someone else’s status, you can tap on the track name to learn more about the artist or even add it to your own status update.
If you don’t see the music icon just yet, try updating your app, or just wait until you’re finally up for the rollout.
WhatsApp’s expanding music integration
According to WA Beta Info, WhatsApp is also working on deeper music integration with third-party apps.
In an upcoming beta update, users will be able to share music directly from Spotify to their WhatsApp status.

This means when you’re listening to a song on Spotify, you’ll see an option to share it as a WhatsApp Status update.
The status will include:
- The song title and artist name
- The album cover
- A “Play on Spotify” button
No mare copy-and-pasting a song ling from Spotify into the WhatsApp Status text field. When shared from Spotify, your status update will include a rich preview of the song.
What about WhatsApp privacy?
WhatsApp says that status updates, including those with music, remain end-to-end encrypted.
This means:
- WhatsApp does not track or store which songs you share.
- Meta only receives anonymous data to pay music rightsholders.
- And only the people you choose to share your status with will see it.
WhatsApp may be late to the game with music on status updates, but better late than never, right?
