Spotify has introduced a new feature for its Premium users called Offline Backup, allowing them to listen to their favorite tracks without an internet connection or the need to download music in advance. This tool offers a more convenient way for users to access music offline, ensuring they never have to worry about losing their tunes when they’re out of data or Wi-Fi range.
Easier offline access for Spotify Premium users
The Offline Backup feature automatically creates a playlist of recently streamed and queued tracks from the user’s cache—a feature that stores previously played songs on the device. This playlist updates continuously, reflecting the music users listen to on a regular basis, meaning there’s always something new to enjoy. Importantly, this feature doesn’t require any extra storage space or data.

In addition to automatically creating playlists, Spotify offers users the option to filter the tracks by artist, genre, or even mood, making it easier to find the right songs for any occasion. This playlist adjusts over time, so as users continue to listen, the selections evolve.
Forget downloading—just listen
Spotify developed Offline Backup in response to user feedback during trials of the feature. This innovation is particularly useful for times when users forget to download their music ahead of time, such as before boarding a plane or traveling in areas with limited service. “Offline Backup ensures that users can access their favorite tracks even if they’re not connected to the internet,” the company explained.
For Offline Backup to work, users must have listened to at least five songs recently, and offline listening must be enabled in the app settings. Once those requirements are met, the playlist will appear automatically whenever the user is offline. Users can also add the playlist to their library for easier access at any time.
Now rolling out on multiple platforms
Starting this week, Offline Backup will be available globally on Android and iOS devices, including support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it a useful feature for music lovers on the go. Spotify advises users to update their app to the latest version if they don’t see the feature right away.
With this new tool, Spotify is making offline music listening easier and more seamless, catering to the needs of users who want reliable access to their favorite songs without the hassle of downloads.
