Happy 20th birthday, Google Maps! (And thanks for saving me)

Google Maps has been my saviour. Literally.

I’m old enough to remember printed maps. And no, I still can’t read them. The concept of squinting at lines and tiny dots while trying to figure out where “North” is? Not my strong suit.

Like that one time, years ago, when I was a new (and very nervous) driver.

I should have used Google Maps back then

After a late-night movie at Westgate Mall, I decided to avoid Ontdekkers Road because it felt too intimidating, even though it was almost empty at 10 PM.

My brilliant plan?

Find my way back the same way I came. You know, that hidden little road at the back of the mall, the one along the train tracks?

Spoiler: I got hopelessly lost. I drove in circles for two hours. At one point I ended up in Roodekrans. Drove around some more, only to find myself right back at Westgate.

Defeated, I took Ontdekkers and was home in 10 minutes. If I had Google Maps back then? Disaster averted.

Google Maps turns 20

Fast forward to today, and Google Maps is celebrating its 20th anniversary

Today, it’s become an indispensable tool for more than 2 billion users per month, and it has truly change the way people navigate and explore.

In 2024 alone, Google Maps provided directions for 1 trillion kilometres. That’s the distance of Earth orbiting the sun, times a thousand!

Here are 20 features designed to make sure no one else ends up doing accidental night tours like I did.

Google Maps: New features

In celebration of this milestone, Google Maps is rolling out updates that go beyond just getting from A to B.

These new features aim to make your travel smarter, more efficient, and, dare I say, fun.

1. Immersive View for routes

No more guessing what your journey looks like.

This feature gives you a 3D, detailed preview of your entire route, including weather updates and traffic conditions.

2. Lens in Maps

Think of this as augmented reality for the directionally challenged (hi, it’s me).

Just point your camera at your surroundings, and Maps will overlay arrows and landmarks in real time.

3. AI-powered search

Forget typing robotic queries.

Now you can search like you talk. Ask, “Where’s a cozy spot for coffee nearby?” and Maps will deliver personalized suggestions.

4. Glanceable directions

Even with your phone locked, you can see real-time directions and updates on your lock screen.

No more risky screen taps while driving.

5. Enhanced Public Transit Info

Real-time transit details, including delays and service changes, are now front and centre, making your bus or train commute less of a guessing game.

6. Electric vehicle charging stations

For EV owners, Maps now shows charging station availability, plug types, and charging speeds.

7. Eco-friendly routing

Want to save fuel and reduce emissions?

Google Maps will suggest routes based on energy efficiency, considering factors like traffic and road incline.

8. Accessible routes

Maps now highlight wheelchair-accessible routes, with step-free paths and detailed accessibility info for public places.

9. Community-powered updates

Local guides can now share real-time updates about places, like changes in opening hours or new menu items at your favourite café.

10. Personalised recommendations

Google Maps will curate suggestions based on your preferences and past activity.

Think Netflix recommendations, but for places.

11. Indoor live view

Navigating large indoor spaces like malls and airports just got easier!

AR directions guide you to the nearest restroom, gate, or coffee shop.

Because believe it or not, I’ll get lost in a mall just as easily as I do on the road…

12. Timeline insights

This feature provides detailed insights into your travel history. It shows where you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled, and even how you got there, whether by car, bike, or on foot.

It’s like having a personal travel diary but without the hassle of writing things down.

13. Safety alerts

Get notified about natural disasters, road closures, or other emergencies along your route.

14. Trip summaries

After your journey, Maps provides a summary, including distance travelled, time spent, and even carbon footprint data.

15. Detailed cycling routes

Cyclists get love too!

Google Maps now offers elevation profiles, bike-friendly roads, and even bike-sharing dock locations.

16. Real-time speed limit notifications

Maps now show speed limits in real time.

It will warn you if you’re going a bit too fast.

17. Collaborative trip planning

Planning a trip with friends?

Share routes, vote on places to visit, and create group itineraries within Maps.

18. Offline Maps auto-update

Downloaded maps will automatically update when connected to Wi-Fi, so you’re never stuck with outdated data.

19. Fuel price comparisons

Find the cheapest gas station along your route with real-time fuel price data.

20. AI-powered restaurant reviews

Maps now analyse user reviews to give you insights like “best for brunch” or “great vegetarian options,” saving you from scrolling endlessly.

Happy birthday, Google Maps!

Twenty years ago, getting lost was a rite of passage.

Today, Google Maps has made it almost impossible (unless you’re stubborn, like younger me).

With these new features, Google Maps isn’t just a tool anymore. It’s your co-pilot, travel buddy, and personal guide.

No more accidental midnight road trips.

Just efficient, informed, and stress-free journeys.
