Fans began gathering early outside the Johannesburg Expo Centre, where the excitement was palpable. Among the highlights was a rush to the Funko stand, where collectors scrambled to secure discounted Funko Pops. Attendee Thandi Nkosi summed up the experience, saying, “I’m here for the cosplays, the stores, and to meet people. Comic Con always has the best energy.”

Cosplay and performances take center stage
Cosplay was a focal point of the day, with many attendees showing off their detailed costumes, inspired by characters from comics, anime, and gaming. Internationally renowned cosplayer CutiePieSensei graced the main stage, introduced by charismatic MC DJ Elliot. Elliot, who is no stranger to the Comic Con circuit, praised the South African fanbase, stating, “Comic Con Africa is my absolute favorite. The community here is incredible.”
Another key performance of the day came from Seoul Flame’s K-pop group, who captivated the crowd with an electrifying display of high-energy choreography. The event, part of the ‘Ignite the Stage’ program, drew large crowds to Otaku Town, a section dedicated to Asian pop culture.
Gaming competitions draw competitors
For gamers, the Red Bull Gaming Ground was the place to be. Fans participated in free-to-play Valorant battles and the Sim Racing Challenge, while at the Dorito Crunch Zone, competitive VR gaming took center stage. Intense matches saw gamers vying for top prizes, including a PlayStation 5, with the action heating up for the weekend ahead.
One of the biggest moments of the day came from KFC’s VR Gaming Experience competition, where Rynard Kruger walked away with a R3,000 cash prize after winning the challenge. Fans also lined up for the 360° Bucket Camera, snapping photos of their cosplay in dynamic style.
