She’s Next competition highlights women entrepreneurs in South Africa

In a step towards fostering female entrepreneurship in South Africa, Visa, in partnership with Absa, announced the winners of the 2024 She’s Next South Africa competition. The competition, aimed at supporting women-owned small businesses, provided financial grants, mentorship, and training to the top finalists, helping them grow their ventures in key sectors such as renewable energy and waste management.

Winner addresses energy concerns

The overall winner of the competition, Mahlatse Mamaila, founder of InoBiodiesel, was awarded a R400,000 grant. Her business, focused on biodiesel production, is seen as a vital contributor to sustainable energy solutions in South Africa. “Being recognized by Visa and Absa is a powerful endorsement of our efforts and the impact we aspire to make. This program validates our belief that every small step matters,” Mamaila said, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity and the support provided by the initiative.

She emphasized that the grant, combined with additional training, will not only enhance the company’s capacity but also create more employment opportunities within their value chain, ultimately driving broader positive change.

Social impact businesses also honoured

The second-place winner, Tshego Molefi of Moli and Mela Group, received a grant of R250,000, while the third-place award of R170,000 went to Pretty Kubyane of eFarma App, a platform supporting agricultural businesses. Additionally, Moli and Mela Group earned the Social Impact honour, securing another R170,000. This category recognises businesses that address critical issues in their communities, delivering measurable social benefits while generating economic value.

Commenting on the competition, Lineshree Moodley, Country Head for Visa South Africa, stated, “Congratulations to all the winners of the 2024 She’s Next competition. At Visa, we aim to empower women entrepreneurs who face additional barriers. Through scaling this program, we plan to support more women, ensuring sustainable growth for their businesses and contributing to a more inclusive economy.”

Further support for SMEs

Beyond the top three winners, an additional 25 small businesses have been selected to participate in a mentorship program designed to provide them with further tools and guidance. Developed in partnership with Absa, this initiative seeks to empower more women entrepreneurs, equipping them to overcome business challenges.

Sanah Gumede, Managing Executive for Strategy and Customer Value Management at Absa, reiterated the bank’s commitment to women entrepreneurs, saying, “We continue to be inspired by women who find ways to get things done, despite the obstacles. We look forward to walking this journey with them for many years to come.”

The She’s Next competition saw a wide range of innovative submissions from women-led businesses in industries such as renewable energy, agritech, and construction, reflecting the growing role of women in reshaping South Africa’s economic landscape.
