When I first heard about the new solar-powered hat, I double-checked my calendar to make sure we weren’t in April. But nope, the EcoFlow Power Hat is no April Fool’s joke.

EcoFlow actually created a hat with solar panels on the brim, and I’m not sure whether to laugh or applaud their ingenuity. I’m leaning towards the latter.

The hat is currently available on pre-order for around R1500 ($79). It is basically what you’d get if a baseball cap and a solar panel had a baby.

I haven’t had the chance to get my hands on one of these futuristic fedoras yet, but I’ve got to admit, part of me is intrigued.

As someone who’s constantly battling a dying phone battery while out and about, the idea of a hat that can keep my devices charged is oddly appealing.

EcoFlow Power Hat specs

Let’s break down some specs, shall we? This power-generating headpiece weighs in at a not-so-featherlight 370g (that’s about 13 ounces for our imperial friends).

It has Perc Monocrystalline Silicon panels on the brim, capable of generating up to 12W of power. Think about it… You can literally wear your power source on your head now.

It comes in two sizes – medium and large – to fit heads ranging from 56 to 61cm in circumference. And for those worried about getting caught in a sudden downpour, fear not!

The hat boasts an IP65 water and dust resistance rating. Your head might get wet, but your personal power plant should keep on ticking.

Multi-tasking, babe

One of the coolest features (pun intended) is the dual USB-A and USB-C ports.

That means you can charge two devices simultaneously. Imagine impressing your friends by charging your phone and powering your Bluetooth speaker, all from your hat!

EcoFlow claims that the hat can fully charge a 4000mAh phone battery in 3-4 hours. That’s assuming optimal sunlight conditions, of course.

So, while it might not be the fastest charger in the West, it could be a lifesaver on those long hikes or beach days when you’ve forgotten your power bank.

A fashion win?

But here’s the million-dollar question: Would I wear it?

Well, as someone who values both practicality and not looking like a complete dork, I’m on the fence. And I’m just saying this because I know hats in general don’t do me justice…

On one hand, never having to worry about a dead phone battery during outdoor adventures sounds fantastic. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’m ready for the inevitable “Nice hat, does it get cable?” jokes.

That said, I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one to see how it works in real life. Who knows? Maybe solar-powered hats will be the next big thing.

Sustainability FTW

After all, if we can have smart watches and smart glasses, why not smart hats?

In the end, whether the EcoFlow Power Hat is a stroke of genius or just another wacky gadget remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure – it’s certainly got people talking.

We’re constantly looking for new ways to harness renewable energy anyway Maybe wearing a mini solar panel on your head isn’t such a crazy idea after all.

So, hat’s off to EcoFlow for thinking outside the box.

Or should I say, on top of the head?
