Comic Con Africa is set to return to Johannesburg from September 26 to 29, celebrating its fifth year with a vibrant lineup of events and guests. Since its debut in 2018, the convention has rapidly become a cornerstone for fans of comics, gaming, film, television, and pop culture, drawing thousands of enthusiasts each year.

A Growing Phenomenon

What began as a hopeful gathering of 15,000 fans at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in 2018 has blossomed into a major event, with attendance numbers skyrocketing to over 70,000 by 2019. “I was initially worried no one would come in costume,” recalls Rene Staack, Talent and Content Director. “But when the doors opened, the sight of thousands of fans in cosplay was a relief and a testament to the event’s appeal.”

Adapting Through Adversity

The pandemic brought significant challenges, forcing the cancellation of planned events like Comic Con Cape Town in 2020. However, the organisers quickly pivoted to an online format, offering a free four-day digital experience. This included interviews, community tips, and weekly fandom quizzes on YouTube, fostering a deeper connection with fans. “Engaging with fans online during the lockdowns created a unique bond,” said Graphic Designer Roberto Carlos. “It felt like we were all navigating this challenging period together.”

Return of the Live Experience

Despite the setbacks, the passion for Comic Con remained strong. The event saw a soft relaunch in 2021 with the “Comic Con Cape Town Pop-Up,” featuring 17 activities across various locations in the city. By September 2022, Comic Con Africa made a triumphant return to a live format at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, once again drawing over 70,000 attendees.

Carla Massmann, Show Director of Comic Con Africa, noted the resilience and dedication of the fans. “The overwhelmingly positive response to our return was humbling. It confirmed that our hard work was appreciated and that the community was eager to reunite.”

Looking Ahead

In April 2023, Comic Con Cape Town held its inaugural full-scale event, attracting over 28,000 fans. This year’s Comic Con Africa is set to be even more spectacular, with over 32,000 attendees expected at the Johannesburg Expo Centre. Fans can look forward to appearances by international celebrities, comic book artists, and cosplayers, including Dan Fogler of “Fantastic Beasts” and “The Walking Dead” fame.

Comic Con Africa’s fifth anniversary promises to be a celebration of community and creativity, showcasing the enduring appeal of pop culture in South Africa. As the event continues to grow, it remains a vibrant and inclusive space for fans to connect and express themselves.
